Before you start

  • Grafana Cloud: the Assistant Cloud MCP User role (Editor and higher have it), and an admin must have accepted the Grafana Assistant terms.
  • To allow changes, the Assistant Admin role or the grafana-assistant-app.cloud-mcp.scope:write permission.
  • Self-hosted: Docker installed and running, and a Grafana service account token with at least Viewer role (Editor for changes).

With write access, Claude hands the question to Grafana Assistant, which works across metrics, logs and traces and returns a grounded answer. With read-only access, Claude answers from the query tools and tells you Assistant needs write access.

Worth knowing

The Cloud plugin connects to Grafana's hosted server at mcp.grafana.com. On the sign-in page you choose read-only or read and write. Claude can only do what your Grafana roles allow. The sign-in lasts an hour and refreshes itself for 30 days.

With write access, Claude can create and change dashboards, alerts, incidents and annotations. The skill tells it to change nothing you didn't ask for and to confirm anything destructive.

The self-hosted plugin asks for your Grafana URL and a service account token when you turn it on, and keeps the token in your system keychain. It adds dozens of tools to Claude's context, so Grafana suggests turning it on only when you need it.
